Honouring the Legacy of Norm McEvoy – A Pillar of Masonic Education

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our esteemed brother, Norman McEvoy, on September 1, 2025. Norm was not only a beloved family man and community servant but also a towering figure in the world of Freemasonry. His contributions to the Craft, particularly in Masonic education, have left an indelible legacy that will continue to inspire brethren for generations to come.

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Norm journeyed to Canada at the age of 21, where he built a remarkable career with the Canadian Bank of Commerce. His dedication, leadership, and integrity marked both his professional and personal life. Initiated into Freemasonry in 1956 in Belfast Lodge #257, Norm’s Masonic path would span decades and continents, culminating in leadership roles including Worshipful Master of Victoria Columbia Lodge #1 and Grand First Principal of the Royal Arch Masons of BC & Yukon.

Perhaps most notably, Norm founded “The Educator” website in 2013, a pioneering resource that revolutionized Masonic education by sharing thoughtful, practical, and esoteric teachings with brethren worldwide. In March of 2022, I had the honour of continuing Norm’s vision by launching The Masonic Journey website, the modern evolution of The Educator. This platform preserves and expands upon Norm’s work, including an archive of his original blog posts accessible on our site here. As steward of The Masonic Journey, I am committed to carrying forward his mission of sharing enlightening Masonic education with the world. We warmly invite brethren and friends to share memories, stories, and reflections about Norm to celebrate his remarkable life and enduring legacy.

Norm also played a critical role in developing mentorship and diploma programs at Ashlar College of Freemasonry, where he was honoured as Director Emeritus.

His authored work, Journey to the Spirit, remains a cornerstone in Masonic literature, exploring the deeper meanings behind the Three Degrees and Royal Arch Masonry. His gentle and insightful approach helped countless brothers on their spiritual and fraternal journeys, embodying the true spirit of mentorship and brotherly love.

Beyond Freemasonry, Norm was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a vibrant community member, contributing through the Lions Club, Rotary, Shriners, and more. His rich bass voice graced the Greater Victoria Police Chorus, and his love for Irish ballads like “Danny Boy” brought joy to many.

Norm’s passing marks the end of a storied chapter but also the continuation of his legacy. In honoring Norm McEvoy, I will commit to upholding the highest standards of education, mentorship, and brotherhood he so passionately championed. May his legacy continue to guide us all on our Masonic journeys.

A true gentleman

Bro Norm was everything a Freemason and human being should aspire to. As the President of the Dormer Masonic Study Circle I communicated with Bro. Norm many times over the years. He was so knowledgable, helpful and most of all always kind and encouraging. I am very saddened by his passing and send my condolences to his family and friends. He has created a lasting legacy and will be sorely missed. A true gentleman Requiescat in pace. Bro. Maurice

Vale Norm McEvoy

Thank you Brother for taking on Norm’s legacy which was spread around the globe via the Internet and email. Down under in Australia I know many read Norm’s informative articles with great interest and would join with me in expressing our sorrow at Norm’s passing into the care of The Great Architect of The Universe!
