Are you a Keeper; Fixer or Consumer

ARE YOU A KEEPER, FIXER  OR CONSUMER                                                                                                                            adapted by V.W. Bro. Norman McEvoy  from a circular email message.

I grew up with very practical parents. A Mother, God Love Her, who reused everything she could.    She was the original Re-Cycle Queen before the word became popular.   A Father who was happier getting his shoes repaired than buying new ones.

Their marriage was tough but their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now. Dad in trousers, khaki shirt & cap. Mom in a house dress, broom in one hand & a dish towel in the other. It was time for fixing things.   The kitchen radio; the screen door and dresses to hem. Things to keep!!

It was a way of life and sometimes it drove me crazy. All that re-fixing ; renewing & saving. I wanted, just once, to be wasteful for that meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you had the means to replace & buy new.

But then one day my Mother died on a clear summer’s night and,in the warmth of that hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there just isn’t any more.  Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away ..never to return.

SO….. While we have it ……..It’s best to Love It.        Fix it when it’s broken & Heal it when it’s sick.      This is true for marriage ; old cars ; children with poor report cards; dogs finding it hard to walk; aging parents & grand parents. We keep them close because they are worth it & because WE are worth it.

There are things in life that make our very existence important, such as people who we know are special.

We keep them close, wherever they may be, and we call them FRIENDS.

They are not consumables with expiry dates and are totally irreplaceable.

THANK GOD FOR FRIENDS.

Have a Wonderful day & God Bless                                         Norm
